About the Show
The Tony Award-winning musical, features music and lyrics by Jeanine Tesori and a book by David Lindsay-Abaire. The show tells the story of Kimberly, a teenage girl living with a rare aging condition that makes her look decades older than she is. As she navigates the trials of high school, family drama, and first love, Kimberly’s story is equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking. With witty, heartfelt lyrics, memorable songs, and an unforgettable cast of characters, Kimberly Akimbo explores the universal challenges of growing up, finding connection, and embracing life—even when time seems to be moving faster than everyone else.
Age Recommendation & Content Warning
Kimberly Akimbo is a bittersweet musical that explores complex themes with great humour and heart. It is recommended for ages 12+, with parental/caregiver discretion advised due to mature subject matter.
Content Considerations:
Chronic Illness & Mortality: Kimberly, a 16-year-old girl, is living with a rare genetic condition that causes her to age rapidly. The story explores her shortened lifespan and her commitment to living each day to the fullest.
Mental Health Themes: The show touches on anxiety, emotional distress and neglect, and the psychological impact of chronic illness, alcoholism, and dysfunctional family dynamics.
Illegal Activity: A key plot element involves a relative encouraging teenagers to participate in check-washing schemes and mail theft.
Language & Adult Humour: The production includes strong language (frequent profanity), mature humour, and references to sexual activity.
